Local versus Imported

We are not here to criticise imported seafood, but simply encourage Queenslanders to eat more local product and ask their suppliers to stock local seafood.

All consumers deserve access to locally wild caught antibiotic free clean seafood. By choosing Australian seafood over imports we are better able to influence whether our seafood is sustainably managed. We also support local industries in the process.

Over 2 million tourists travel to Tropical North Queensland each year and are looking for a tropical food experience that includes fresh local seafood. However with an increasing amount of cheap imported varieties of seafood used in restaurants; the integrity of some menus can be questionable.

Tourists and locals deserve to enjoy local produce so we encourage restaurant to serve local seafood and customers to ask ‘Is it local’ seafood when they see ‘reef fish’ or ‘tropical fish’ listed on the menu.

Seafood Names and labelling Standards

The Australia New Zealand Food Standards Code contains a mandatory country of origin labelling law for imported un-packaged fish sold loose in retail shops.

Follow the links for more information about seafood labelling, standard fish names or food standards factsheets.

If you suspect that seafood is wrongly labelled, using an incorrect fish name or not displaying country of origin, please report the incident on-line at www.seafoodhotline.com or phone the Australian Seafood Consumer Hotline 1800 737 147
